Winter Park has a rich and storied history that revolves to a great extent around its lakes. As the Orlando metropolitan area has grown up around Winter Park, local residents have worked hard to protect the natural and historic flavor of the town, and the result is a truly unique Florida experience.
Just east of Orlando amongst downtown Winter Park lies the Winter Park chain of lakes. This chain covers 2,781 acres and includes Lake Virginia, Lake Osceola, Lake Maitland, Lake Mizell, and Lake Minnehaha. These five lakes are all interconnected with deep, narrow channels, allowing for navigation between lakes.
These lakes are an extremely popular destination both for waterskiers and pontoon boats, but that does not mean the fish aren’t biting. Lake Maitland is a great spot to hook into a large-mouth bass, while Lake Virginia and provides a great outlet for schools of crappie and sunshine bass.

Public access is available at a boat ramp located behind Rollins College. The double lane paved ramp is at Dinky Dock Park, located on Ollie Street just off of East Fairbanks Avenue.
The park features a sandy beach, park benches, barbecue grills, picnic tables, a fishing dock, and bathrooms. In order to ensure that the Winter Park lakes don’t become too frenzied, a ramp use permit must be acquired from the City of Maitland or the City of Winter Park.

Winter Park is known throughout Central Florida and beyond for its high-end boutiques, exquisite restaurants, art museums and well-kept gardens and parks. Beautiful, tree-lined Park Avenue is the “main drag” through downtown Winter Park, and is a destination for those seeking exceptional meals and shopping.
The Winter Park Farmer’s Market, located in the old train depot at 200 West New England Avenue, opens on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and sells produce, plants and freshly-baked items. Every March, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious juried outdoor art festivals, takes place in Central Park, adjacent to Park Avenue.
One of Winter Park’s defining characteristics is its first-rate public school system. Elementary students are dispersed between Brookshire Elementary, Lakemont Elementary, Dommerich Elementary, and Audubon Park Elementary. Glenridge Middle School and Maitland Middle School provide education for grades 6 through 8, while high schoolers are sent to Winter Park High School.
